How to Select a Slotting Machine
Choosing a slotting machine is more than checking ram stroke. This buying guide compares B5032, B5040, B50100 and B50125 slotting machines by working envelope, workpiece load and cutting performance. Learn key factors to consider for keyway, internal spline and form‑groove processing and what documents to prepare to get an accurate machine proposal.
Choosing a slotting machine requires more than just checking ram stroke. When machining keyways, internal splines and formed profiles, you need to evaluate workpiece dimensions, part weight, working space, precision requirements and production batch size together. Wrong selection often results in insufficient working range, difficult clamping or extra secondary machining operations.
The B5032–B50125 product line covers compact and heavy-duty slotting machines to handle workpieces of different sizes. This guide explains core selection parameters and clarifies application scenarios for four models: B5032, B5040, B50100 and B50125.
What Machining Tasks Can Slotting Machines Complete
Slotting uses reciprocating linear tool motion to machine internal workpiece features. Typical applications include:
- Keyway cutting on sleeves, hubs and belt pulleys
- Internal spline machining
- Form groove processing
- Machining hard-to-reach inner surfaces that cannot be milled externally
- Single-piece and small-batch manufacturing requiring flexible process adjustment
Before finalizing your machine selection, you need to define groove width and depth, as well as workpiece outer diameter, the distance from end face to machining zone, part weight and table clamping method.
Core Steps for Slotting Machine Selection
1. Confirm Required Ram Stroke
Ram stroke must cover the full machining length, with extra allowance for tool length, entry and exit cuts. Compact models B5032 and B5040 offer maximum ram stroke of 320 mm. For large workpieces, choose B50100 with 1000 mm stroke or B50125 with 1250 mm stroke.
A long ram stroke matters not for the stroke number itself, but for deep internal features, tall workpieces or long cutting zones. If you only select the machine by minimum groove size, you will easily ignore the space required for part clamping and tool movement.
2. Verify Workpiece Load Capacity and Table Size
Workpiece weight determines machine model and configuration. B5032 and B5040 support max workpiece weight of 500 kg with a 630 mm diameter worktable.
B50100 and B50125 are built for heavy workpieces. Their maximum load capacity reaches 4000 kg and 4500 kg respectively, paired with 1250 mm and 1600 mm tables. When your part size, weight or clamping demands exceed compact machine limits, heavy-duty models are recommended.
3. Evaluate Full Working Envelope, Not Only Outer Dimensions
B5032 maximum workpiece dimension: 600×320 mm. B5040 maximum workpiece dimension: 620×320 mm. The distance from table surface to ram bottom is 490 mm for B5032 and 510 mm for B5040. Always check this dimension with your clamping setup: fixture height, reference plane, workpiece overhang and groove location. The same workpiece will require different working space under different clamping solutions.
4. Select Machine Based on Cutting Force and Material
B5032 and B5040 deliver maximum cutting force of 7500 N. Heavy-duty B50100 and B50125 can reach maximum cutting force up to 24500 N at cutting speed 10–20 m/min.
Provide workpiece material, blank condition and profile parameters during selection. These details help assess tool selection, cutting parameters and rigidity requirements for your machining system.
B5032 and B5040: Compact Machine Selection Guide
B5032 and B5040 are suitable for keyway and internal spline machining for workpieces under 500 kg. Both share identical ram stroke (320 mm), table diameter (630 mm) and maximum cutting force (7500 N).
The main difference lies in vertical working space. B5040 increases the distance between table surface and ram bottom to 510 mm. Choose B5040 for taller workpieces, large fixtures, deep internal profiles or applications needing extra operating clearance.
Standard B5032 and B5040 do not include rapid table traverse. These models are ideal when you prioritize working envelope, setup accuracy and cutting stability instead of reducing idle auxiliary time.
When to Choose Heavy-duty B50100 and B50125
B50100 and B50125 are engineered for oversized workpieces, featuring long ram travel and large-diameter rotary tables.
| Parameter | B50100 | B50125 |
|---|---|---|
| Max Ram Stroke | 1000 mm | 1250 mm |
| Table Diameter | 1250 mm | 1600 mm |
| Max Workpiece Weight | 4000 kg | 4500 kg |
| Max Longitudinal Table Travel | 1200 mm | 1400 mm |
| Max Cross Table Travel | 1000 mm | 1120 mm |
| Main Motor Power | 30 kW | 37 kW |
Heavy-duty models support optional rapid longitudinal / cross table traverse at 500 mm/min. This option is recommended for large parts with multiple machining zones or projects requiring shorter position-switching time.
Required Documents for Precise Machine Selection
To avoid mistakes caused by single-parameter selection, prepare the following materials:
- Workpiece drawings (PDF, DWG or other standard formats)
- Workpiece material and blank condition
- Outer dimensions and weight of workpiece
- Width, depth, length and position of grooves, splines or formed profiles
- Machining tolerance and surface finish requirements
- Estimated production batch
- Requirements for fixtures, automation level and rapid table traverse
With this information, we can define ram stroke, working envelope, table specifications, cutting force and optional configurations.
Workflow from Selection to Technical Proposal
First determine whether your workpiece fits the compact B5032/B5040 range or requires heavy-duty B50100/B50125 capacity. Then check working envelope against drawings and clamping scheme. For large multi-zone workpieces, specify whether rapid table traverse is needed on heavy machines.
